DAY 56-5/5/11

Today as I was running through some beautiful pasteur land, I saw a Sheriff’s car swerve towards me, then head back into the lane. I jumped and just froze as she passed me. I was so stunned that a police officer would try to make me jump, that I just turned and gave her the stinky eye until she went over the hill. I expect it from an occassional jerk, but not a law enforcement officer.

I turned and started to run again. About a minute later, I look to my right and see the sheriff’s car with lights flashing, passing me from behind. I look at her and about 50 yards ahead, she turns and heads towards me again.

I immediately stopped, held my hands out to my side and thought, “now she’s pissed that I gave her such a long look, she came back and is going to falsley accuse me of flipping her off, or something. I can’t believe this bitch is going to arrest me.

She pulled up beside me, rolled her window down, and said, ” I am so sorry for swerving towards you. I heard my radio blast and looked down for a split second. When I looked up, you were right in front of me”.

She held out her hand to apologize. I shook her hand, in relief. We talked for a few minutes and she pulled out an ice cold bottle of water and handed it to me. She apologized again, and wished me well on my run. I put my hand on her shoulder, thanked her for being so nice, and she drove off.

When was the last time a police officer turned around in the road to apologize to you? Nothing ceases to amaze me anymore.
